Giving Your Opinion

🇫🇷 Version en français plus bas ⬇️

Two espressos served on a wooden board at Anne Caron café, Paris — a Meilleur Ouvrier de France coffee roaster on rue Notre-Dame de Nazareth
Two espressos at Anne Caron's coffee shop on rue Notre-Dame de Nazareth in Paris — she is a Meilleur Ouvrier de France in coffee roasting. What do you think: is this your idea of the perfect Parisian coffee break? In French, we'd say — donnez votre avis !

In a conversation, being able to give your opinion on a subject, express your enthusiasm, or introduce a nuance is really important.

There are different ways to give your opinion:

— confirming or validating someone else's view

— giving your opinion directly

— qualifying or hesitating

— denying or rejecting

✍️ You can draw up a list of ways to express your opinion. It's often quite straightforward. You'll find examples on the excellent TV5 Monde website, a free resource (films, TV, exercises, etc): https://apprendre.tv5monde.com/fr/aides/grammaire-exprimer-son-opinion

🎧 Then it's interesting to listen to how people naturally and concretely express their opinions in French. You'll find a variety of very useful turns of phrase to notice in the following two episodes:

THE REFERENCE

Do you have la réf, as we say?

The hugely famous footballer Kylian Mbappé caused quite a stir with his remark about the Nice team:

Vous pensez ? Moi, je pense pas. C'est mon avis.
